The National Technical Committee for Surveillance and Response to COVID-19 reports on the epidemiological situation in Equatorial Guinea, as of June 8, 2021

Under the direction of MINSABS and with the support of WHO

The National Technical Committee for Surveillance and Response to COVID-19 in Equatorial Guinea, under the direction of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MINSABS) and with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO), organizes a press conference (the eighteenth during the pandemic) to present updated epidemiological data on the evolution of COVID-19 and the vaccination campaign in the country, as of June 8, 2021.

To date, 146,882 accumulated PCR tests have been performed, 3,932 in the last 7 days, confirming 82 new cases of COVID-19 and a total of 199 active cases. There are 25 hospitalized patients, 23 with mild and moderate symptoms and one of them in serious condition. No deaths are reported, the fatality rate is 1.37 and 27 patients have been discharged. Mass testing is progressing at the national level. To date, a total of 10,537 PCR tests have been carried out, within the framework of the campaign, 5,724 in the island region and 4,813 in the continental region.

These data indicate a decrease in the contagion curve, in positivity and hospital pressure, as well as an improvement in the management of patients in intensive care units (to date, there is only one case nationwide). “Results that are largely due to the execution of the second mass testing campaign in the island and continental region, to the implementation of the Community Intervention Strategy in both regions for the containment and spread of the virus, to the inter sectorial participation in the actions undertaken by the Technical Committee and, above all, at the disposal and delivery of our health personnel “, listed the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Diosdado Vicente Nsue Milang.

Regarding the National Vaccination Campaign against COVID-19, as of June 8, a total of 148,579 people have been vaccinated in both regions and 88,780 have received the second dose. “We announce that our Government has strengthened its policies for the purchase of vaccines by financing 500,000 more doses that we will receive soon,” announced the Minister of Health and Social Welfare.

Reduction of the level of positivity

At the national level, Minister Nsue Milang pointed out the reduction of the positivity index from 9.17% to 1.04%, with a special impact on the continental region of the country since 4 weeks after the intensive actions in this area it was achieved reduce this index from 16.6% to 2.3%, remaining below 5% in the last three weeks.

“However, it is worrying that there are still difficulties in locating 100% of confirmed patients. Once again I appeal to these people with irresponsible health behavior to become aware of the individual and collective danger that their bad practices represent ”, warned Nsue Milang.
